Male Masochism: Censoring fantasies
Learn about the psychology of men’s submissive kinks in short digestible pieces. In this entry, men’s sexual fantasies of censoring the view of women's bodies.
Men derive pleasure from viewing female nudity and admiring the beauty of women’s bodies. The masochistic pleasure found in being denied access to women’s sexuality can extend to the denial of their contemplation from afar. Thus, the masochist can find erotic delight in diverting his gaze from sexually arousing spectacles, or imagining to himself scenarios where he is forced to look away, or situations in which the sexual material is altered to censor women’s bodies.
For instance, the masochist’s erotic imagination may dwell on the idea that he should lower his gaze whenever it happens to land on a woman he finds attractive. Since he does not deserve such a woman, he believes he should not be looking at her either. Such an action not only serves to remind him of his unworthiness but it is also a demonstration of respect toward the desired woman.
This denial of the view of the female body pertains especially to the man’s private viewing of media for the purpose of masturbation. Whether he views actual explicit material, such as pornography, or, with the aid of his imagination, simply looks at nonsexual photos and videos of women he finds attractive, he may deny himself the visual pleasure by looking away or by altering the media to censor whatever he deems himself undeserving of.
This sexual interest in denying oneself the view of female nudity has greatly benefited from modern-day technology. To the great delight of the masochists who are paradoxically aroused by this denial, photo and video editing tools have made possible and easy the alteration of media to censor the parts of the female body that are deemed off limits.
The parts that are usually censored are the bare breasts, buttocks, and genitalia—the parts that are conventionally sexually arousing. But censoring is not limited to nudity: even clothed bodies can benefit from the magical effect of visual obfuscation. This kind of censoring is, in a way, more humiliating and pathetic in the imagination of some masochists, as it makes them feel like they do not even deserve to see women’s bodies covered.
In censored media, the focus may shift to other body parts like the woman’s armpits or her feet, if the masochist has such an interest. In being denied visual access to the conventionally attractive parts of the woman’s body, he feels like he only deserves to look at these secondary parts uncensored. Denial may be compounded, in turn, if these auxiliary parts are obfuscated, in which case the masochist is left in complete denial of any view of the woman, an absolute humiliation.
For some men, censoring the woman’s eyes in photographs is an especially potent expression of denial. It evidently serves to prevent the masochist from looking the woman in the eye. Such direct eye contact, he believes, would only be appropriate between equals. Thus, cognizant of his inferiority in relation to the woman, the masochist believes he does not deserve her eye contact. Wishing to be respectful, he chooses to look down instead.
On the internet, there are communities of men who censor women’s bodies in sexually explicit photos and videos. They share these censored media online for the enjoyment of their peers. The female body is usually censored by pixelation, blurring, or the superposition of black boxes and other images. Of these different censoring styles, pixelation is the most prominent. The “pixel”—in reference to pixelated regions of an image or a video—has thus gained a symbolic significance of denial for the masochists who participate in these activities. As such, they like to be told things like all they deserve is pixels, and similar invective that runs on the same theme.
Men who like “censors”—referring to censored media—often seek to have others edit for them the material they use for masturbation. Censoring it themselves is counterproductive, as they have to view it uncensored first before being able to edit it. Thus, much like trying to tickle oneself, the exercise can end in disappointment unless it is performed by someone else for the masochist’s benefit.
Technology has provided solutions for this difficulty with the development of automated censoring tools powered by artificial intelligence. These tools can identify human body parts in an image and detect if they are bare or clothed. The identified regions can then automatically be censored. Some of these tools have been integrated into internet browsers to offer a “safe” viewing experience online, for the masochists who might otherwise accidentally happen upon a view they do not believe they are worthy of seeing.
Masochists who enjoy censors can find thrill in the idea of losing access to the original images and videos they wish to have edited. In this absolute denial, they find pleasure in condemning themselves to viewing only the censored versions, after the originals are forever destroyed. When, for instance, the material in question is images of a particular woman the masochist admires, his imagination may perceive such acts of censoring and irreversible deletion as appropriate measures. In his erotic train of thought, the woman he desires would not want him looking at uncensored pictures of her, as such a privilege is reserved for adequate men. Keeping only the censored versions is thus a show of respect.
The more imaginative masochists incorporate science fiction into their fantasies of censoring. Some imagine a dystopian future in which men are equipped with the so-called “beta chip”, a brain implant which enforces real-time censoring capabilities on the vision of inferior men like beta males. Whether voluntary or mandatory, this imagined procedure condemns the chipped man to navigate the world without ever seeing women uncensored.

Why are some men aroused by the idea of censoring women’s bodies? Because these fantasies primarily express the theme of the man’s failure to obtain sexual access to women. This basic theme is one of several sources of erotic stimulation in men’s masochism. Read more about it below. 👇
